Architecture excursion to Hamburg (11.10.-14.10.2024)

This year’s architecture excursion took us to Hamburg, a city full of history, culture and modern architecture, for three days. On Friday, October 11, 2024, we set off late in the evening and flew directly from Graz to the Hanseatic city.

Day 1 – City tour, Elbphilharmonie and Hafencity

Our Saturday began with a city tour through Hamburg’s impressive center. The tour took us along the Jungfernsteg, where we were able to enjoy the beautiful view of the Binnenalster. From there, we continued on to the magnificent town hall, an imposing neo-Renaissance building. The St. Nikolai Church, which today serves as a memorial, was also on the program and gave us an impressive insight into Hamburg’s history.

One particular highlight was the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. After admiring the architectural giant from the outside, we enjoyed the breathtaking view from the plaza. After a short break in the architecturally very interesting Hafencity, we finally made our way to the Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s famous nightlife district, where we ended the day in a convivial atmosphere.

Day 2 – Elbe tunnel, harbor tour, architecture and timber construction

On Sunday, we started our day with a visit to the Old Elbe Tunnel, which took us to the other side of Hamburg. We had the opportunity to explore one of the oldest underwater tunnels in Europe.

We then went on a harbor tour, which took us through the Speicherstadt warehouse district and the modern HafenCity. The Speicherstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, impressed us with its historic brick buildings and picturesque canals.

After the boat tour, we visited the restored old bunker, which has been given a new lease of life with a spectacular roof garden. Another architectural highlight of the day was a visit to the Roots, Germany’s tallest timber building. We were impressed by the innovative construction method and the sustainable concept, just like the other extraordinary new buildings in HafenCity.

Day 3 – Return journey to Graz

On Monday morning, it was time to say goodbye to Hamburg. With many new impressions and exciting conversations in our luggage, we made our way back to Graz.

Our company outing offered a perfect mix of culture, architecture and shared experiences – a trip that we will remember for a long time to come.
